Cruising the Chilean Fjords (Part IV). Glacier Alley and the ‘City at the End of the World.’
Today we travel Glacier Alley to Ushuaia, Argentina, known as the ‘City at the End of the World.’ This is the last land we will be on for eight days as we then head another 730 miles to the south to the Anarctic Peninsula. We have two Beagle Channel navigation scientists joining our cruise today to help the Captain navigate this channel to Ushuaia.
This will be the worst picture quality of the trip as most of this travel is very early AM under low light conditions which my camera didn’t handle well. But, I still wanted to share images of the many glaciers we saw but I’ll minimize the commentary on this post.
The second glacier we encountered, below, was my favorite of the six we saw through Beagle channel.
Today’s Moment of Zen:
And then the sunrise and the skies began to clear as we approached Ushuaia.
Because Ushuaia, Argentina is the gateway to Antarctica, it has a port large enough to dock us so we don’t have to tender to port. The port is loaded with vessels stocking up for their scientific explorations. Ours is the one taking up the last slip in the very back.
Next, we’re on a mission to find the post office at the end of the world to mail postcards to friends and family before set sail for the Antarctic Peninsula.
